Great Cruise by A Traveler from Washington, DC
Sailing date: Nov 2012

Pros:
Ship

Cons:
Casino

The ship was great and one of the cleanest that I have ever sailed on. All staff that I encounted were friendly, courteous and willing to help. The food was very good and there were so many places to eat and such a variety to choose from.

The room was great, however, the tv and safe could have been more updated. I was surprised that there no basic amenities in the room, e.g., shower cap, conditioner, or lotion.

Ship was an old Holiday Inn by Al from FLL
Sailing date: Sep 2012

Pros:
Lovely sea on calm days

Cons:
Old Holiday Inn, old carpets, you get what you pay for

Norwegian Sun is an old Holiday Inn hotel. Just the basics.

Pros:

Cons:
Food and Spa

Ship was older. They casino had terrible smell of smoke. The weather was to cold to take advantage of the pool and whirlpool. They food was either overcooked or undercooked. We had the Chef's Table and the food was average, not what we expected.

Freestyle Dining aka Limited Dining by Vi S from Port Canaveral, Florida
Sailing date: Oct 2010

Pros:
British Comedian, Celine Dion and Il Divo Impersonators

Cons:
Expensive Specialty Dining, expensive drinks, endless lines for dining, poorly trained and apathetic cabin and dining room staff, poor entertainment - only 1 show in 13 days that had Showgirls

Embarkation very good - Dover was eeasily accessible - cabin was adequate although a little tired looking and shower tiny. Only supplied shower gel, hand soap and shampoo in dispensers - because shower was so small, it was impossible not to lose half of the shampoo and shower gel was diluted with gushing water - when empty you had to wait a day to have replaced. Old, outdated little TV - stations limited to 1 movie in English others in foreign languages - Fox, BBC & old repeated E-news and 5 stations promoting NCL. Freestyle dining did not work on Transatlantic cruise - always had lines in the 2 dining rooms - buffet on 11th deck was ALWAYS full - on several occasion we had to carry our food up 2 flights of stairs or take the elevator to the 12th deck to find a seat - then return downstairs when we forgot items like cutlery, tea, coffee or butter - difficult carrying plates and tea through public walkways. Part of the problem was that the outdoor seating could not be used because the Fall weather did not cooperate. Specialty dining was rather a joke. We booked into the Bistro for a French dinner with friends. Took with us the 15% discount wine coupon - but the wine list and server failed to indicate that the discount applied only to "house" wines (read the small print) - House Wines did not appear at all on the Wine List. When we presented the coupon, the server was ready to explain why it did not qualify. Our friend asked the price of house wines - they were approximately $10 to $30 cheaper. Another "coupon" in the NCL discount book was Purchase 2 Cover Charges in the Bistro ($40) and receive 1 cover charge waved in the Tex Mex. Again, we forgot to read the minute print on the coupon - this discount applied to almost all the NCL ships EXCEPT the Sun. When we ordered the Lobster at the Bistro, our friend pointed out that there was an additional $10 cover charge for the steak or the lobster - so the cover charge was really $30 and not $20. Entertainment was mediocre - we counted 4 of the 12 evenings to even be considered a "show". Other entertainers included a juggler, acrobat, hypnotist, German instrumentalist who appeared twice and an aging ballroom dance couple. None of those shows included dancers. One show was performed by the crew. At many performances we noticed people leaving. It took 2 days to receive an ice bucket - which turned out ot be an old metal milk jug with no lid that was filled with ice. At 1 p.m. one day we requested clean towels - we called again at 3 p.m. and at 5 p.m. We were then told to wait until the cabin steward comes on duty at 6 p.m. He arrived at 6:30 p.m. and indicated he would report this to his Supervisor - we heard no more. When NCL advertised 100 internet minutes for $55 it sounded a good deal. Unfortunately, there is an additional $3.99 charge for the privilege of using the service - and it took approximately 6-7 minutes after the internet was connected before actually getting online. On 3 occasions while on Facebook and emails, the service was disconnected. Many people complained of a similar problem - we were told that it was Yahoo's problem. Actual ability to send and receive emails was less than 15 of the 100 minutes. Casino was nice - even though we lost 13 nights - cute 1 cent machines and very friendly poker dealers. Smoking - in the handbook in the cabin, there were 2 specific references to NCL's smoking policy - passengers could SMOKE IN THEIR CABINS, on balconies and on decks although in one area of the deck where people were eating, one side of the ship was smoking and one side non. Pipes and cigars were also allowed making it unpleasant when the wind (it was a windy cruise) blew down the deck and into our noses and mouths. The food was very good - passengers were very nice that helped make the cruise worthwhile. The pools were kept very clean and the public areas were also clean.

Ship Quality
Ship was kept very clean but accessibility from Deck 4 was limited and a long walk to the public areas - one section of 4 small elevators - the other elevators did not go down to the 4th deck. Ship's self service dining areas were inadequate. Only one dining room was open during certain times.

Negatives: Too many "fee" dining rooms - not enough dining rooms open, too crowded. Food good.

Shower too small - cabin steward did not know when soap and shampoo dispensers were empty - dispensers were located under shower and were diluted and much was wasted. TV many years old and stations inadequate. Hit my head several times on folded bunk bed located immediately above bed.

Unforgettable by A Traveler from GR
Sailing date: Jan 2008

Pros:
Crew, ports

Cons:
food

This is the first time I have cruised with NCL and I am comparing it to my cruises with Carnival and Royal Caribbean. The crew was very friendly and helpful; they play a big part in making the overall experience pleasant. We truly enjoyed the ports of call. In Honduras I recommend booking an excursion because there is nothing to do right at the pier. We did a city tour which was very nice. In Belize we visited the Mayan ruins, the tour was very educational. Cozumel had great shopping. I was highly impressed by NCLs private island. The water there was crystal clear and very clean, extremely pleased! Heard others complain about some of the ports. Remember these are poor countries, enjoy the culture and do as they do when visiting their homeland. Another contributing factor to the overall experience is the dinning. I was not (nor were the other six I traveled with) impressed with the food on this ship. It is defiantly not up to par with the other cruise lines. The quality and variety of the food was lacking significantly. On other cruise lines they had a part of the menu that remained constant every night so if you did not like the new meals for the night you knew there was something to please you. It also took us two hours to eat in the main dinning room so take that into account if you want to attend other events. I thought the portions were rather small and although you can order as much as you like the waiting time is too long. Did pay the cover charge and tried the steakhouse. Not impressed, not worth it, would never go to a specialty restaurant again. Breakfast at the buffet was always the same, never changed. The concept of freestyle cruising was something new and we did like the idea. It was nice to eat when you want where you want. On other cruise lines you have to be there when they say and they get mad when your not there on time so this is a very flexible eating style. Sometimes we missed not having the same waiter every night. Since you dont eat at the same time every night and you dont have the same waiter there are no shows put on by the staff which is always enjoyable on the other lines.

The wear and tear on the ship is noticeable. I always enjoy spending time in the glamorous atriums but this one was very plain and disappointing to base your first impressions on. The crew did keep the ship very clean. I appreciated them enforcing the use of hand sanitizer.

This is the first cruise that we booked a balcony room. I always thought there was no point in one because you spend so little time in your room but I really enjoyed having a balcony. Our housekeeper was very nice but it was the little things that added up to disappoint. We had to call twice before they came and refilled our soap and shampoo. On Wednesday of the cruise we got our first and only towel animal. It is so nice to return to your room and be surprised with an animal. Very dissatisfied that they did not have a towel animal in our room every night like the other two cruise lines did. Also, the mattress was not the greatest. The couch bed for the third person was absolutely pathetic! They should be ashamed to have someone sleep on that!

The quality of the shows was not the best I have seen but the dance crew were very passionate about their jobs! The variety of the shows were was good. The cruise director (Linda) was the worst I have ever had. She was not funny and did not hype up the crowd very effectively! Her behavior was not always professional either.

great ship by HANS D. from denver
Sailing date: Nov 2006

Pros:
with rare exceptions (cabin staff) the crew is first class and so is the food, particularly in the multiple specialty restaurants, occasionally rising to a quality rarely experienced on cruise ships.entertainment included several review style productions with fine talent and unuual quality

Cons:
matresses could be better and wines are overpriced as on most ships

one of the best overall cruises of more than 25 on various lines
