Norwegian Experience
by Lynn D. from East Brunswick, NJ
Sailing date:
Nov 2012
Pros:
happy hour 1/2 price cocktails, dining room menus, nighttime entertainment
Cons:
the odor that permeated the ship, soiled cabin carpets
The Jewel is a beautiful ship that is well-maintained and well-staffed.
Ship Details:
Ship Quality
There was an odor that I can liken to the smell of a nursing home, especially in the cabin's bathroom.
Dining/Food
Stateroom Quality
We were in an aft cabin where I felt too much of the ship's movement.
Ship Staff Quality
Entertainment & Activities
On the last day (Saturday), the crew put on its talent show. I would move that to the beginning of the cruise so the guests can really get to know the personal side of the staff members. This would help the passengers see the staff more as individuals instead of just waiters, cleaners, etc.

Beautiful Cruise
by Sheri T from Arlington, TX
Sailing date:
Sep 2012
Pros:
Lovely ship, friendly staff, incredible ports in Alaska.
Cons:
Poor food and service in main dining rooms and buffet.
This is a beautiful ship, we very much enjoyed out time on the cruise. Alaska is an amazing place and the excursions offered allowed us to see and do a nice variety of things. Although we enjoyed our trip, we felt the dining experience was below par unless we were willing to pay cover charges to dine in the specialty restaurants. We are not fans of "Freestyle" cruising.
Ship Details:
Ship Quality
This is a nice size ship, not too far to walk anywhere. Very well maintained and very clean.
Dining/Food
The food in the main (complimentary) dining rooms was poor as was the service. The buffet food was no better and the seating very limited. From talking to friends we made on the ship, if you pay for the restaurants the food was much better and service excellent. I'm just sorry the cruise line doesn't respect their passengers on a limited budget by serving better quality food without the extra cost.
Stateroom Quality
We had an outside cabin with a window which we considered of nice size. Very comfortable and convenient to the public areas.
Ship Staff Quality
Overall the staff on the ship were friendly and helpful. Our cabin steward was awesome and made the trip special.
Entertainment & Activities
There was a nice variety of entertainment througout the ship. Dance lessons, seminars, live music and great shows in the main showroom. The circus show Bijou was absolutely incredible!

by Steve from Fort Worth tx

Pros:
Shows were fun
Cons:
Buffet was chaos
Overall a good job. About what I expected. Elevators were a problem. Slow and often unavailable. The Garden Place dining area was chaos on a daily basis so we avoided it. Tsar dining area was nice and the staff was great.

What a Trip!
by Jim M. from Arlington, TX
Sailing date:
Jun 2012
Pros:
Scenery
Cons:
embarkation
The cruise started off on the wrong foot with the computer system being down for embarkation, which made that process arduously slow but still departing on schedule. Overall the cleanliness of the ship was very impressive with beautiful decorative appointments. The food was consistently very good and at times excellent. Service was great.
Ship Details:
Ship Quality
The ship was well laid out and directions posted frequently making it easy to find where you wanted to go.
Dining/Food
The food was excellent overall with only a few disappointing items.
Stateroom Quality
We opted for a balcony room, which was quite roomy and afforded excellent views of the scenery on the inside passage.
Ship Staff Quality
The ships staff was super. Even the housekeepers were friendly and smiling.

Relaxing Cruise with Reservations
by A Traveler from New York, NY
Sailing date:
Feb 2012
Pros:
The Sea, My Balcony
Cons:
Poor Maintenance of public areas
PROS: Oswald, my cabin attendance was efficient and did an excellent job. Janell, in Tsar's restaurant was very kind and always remembered my name. In general, the crew were friendly, hard workers and earnest. I enjoyed the Bora Bora spa and did not mind paying the $100.00, as that kept the crowds away. The cruise itself of smooth and the getaway I really needed. CONS: Point One: Upon boarding, I immediately noticed that the finishing of the workmanship of the Jewel was not of high quality. My aft balcony was cabin felt smaller than what I am used to. Together with other cruise critics, we did a cabin tour..and I found the so-called mini-suites...were um, Mini. The only impressive accommodation was the aft Penthouse. Point Two: Though there were the washy-washy girls in the Garden Cafe...who encouraged clean hands, I found that the Public areas were just not sanitary. Though there were attendants with brooms, they constantly overlooked food debris left under table by other cruisers. Debris such as orange rinds, bread, etc. The tables need to be replaced as many were chipped on the corners. I often questioned the cleanliness of the silver and glassware. Clearly, the restaurant staff have not have four star training. I was often served soup with food dripping over the edges. And the bread was served cold. Point Three: Obviously, NCL wants to attract solo travelers...and I would think in 2012, your crew would be accustomed to serving a female solo traveler, as I was. I feel your crew needs training in this area. For example, on day one, a cabin attendant, from down the hall commented.."Wow! You are tall!!" and another when I was enroute to dinner, I heard from another attendant, "Beautiful." On a cruise when I just wanted peace, I was not interested in running commentary from crew. In addition, I grew weary at restaurants of being asked about the whereabouts of my "date". Point Four: NCL needs to include racial and cultural diversity with interactive audience games. NCL does an excellent job at hiring staff from around the world. And with various cultures represented among your passengers, they should also be included in your on-stage activities. Also, it should be announced how people can sign up for the various games. POINT FIVE: The Internet Cafe was useless. After waiting 11 minutes to access the Internet, while being charged 75 cents per minute. I requested and received a credit. I am not the type of traveler who needs doting. Overall, I got the rest I needed but I do think attention to the areas I outlined could enhance the NCL brand.

A Great Experience
by Jim G from Dallas, Texas
Sailing date:
Apr 2011
Pros:
Food and Beverage, The Crew
Cons:
It Ended
Had a great time, great crew some of the passengers were a bit out of hand (loud and not caring about others). Only drawback was the tour desk asked the agent a simple question he appeared to be "put out" that I asked him This department is a major problem we have had on previous cruises too

Ship Quality
Well maintained
Dining/Food
Excellent! We did notice many times the Executive Chef and other members of his team walking though the outlets to ensure high quality

a GREAT experience!!
by Gonzo from Argentina
Sailing date:
Mar 2010
Pros:
Service, cleanliness, the crew are detailed oriented!!
Cons:
pool area (too small and crowded)
We went on a cruise to western caribbean (roatan, Belize, Costa Maya and Bahamas). The ports of call were great except for Belize. I do not recommend to take the excursion to the city by train. There's little to see there and it looked a bit dangerous. I recommend a beach excursion (diving, snorkeling etc). As regards the ship we had a wonderful experience, I must say it was our first cruise ever. We chose NCL because we liked it ti be free style. That's great when you are on vacations... if you wan to dress up with a formal attire you can but if you want to use a pair of shorts and a top it's fine too. You can sit on the dinning rooms with your friends or couple instead of the cruise line assigning you a table. The NCL jewel has 4 main restaurants (one of them buffet) included within the rate and some speciality restaurants (about 6) that are with an additional charge (10 to 25 depending on the restaurant). The food is great, the service and staff is great.... you won't regreat choosing NCL. PS: we travelled with 1 year old baby and we found adecuate food, high chairs, baby cribs etc. No problems going up or ashore to the ports of call with him as everything was safe and well organized!

Western Caribbean cruise in January
by A Traveler from Thousand Oaks, CA
Sailing date:
Jan 2010
Pros:
the ship was well maintained and clean
Cons:
food choices and quality didn't match up to a previous cruise
ship and stateroom were nice, clean and comfortable. the activities weren't as organized as i would have expected; too many changes without notice. art auction was the worst i've experienced in 3 cruises. meals were hit and miss - some good, some not so good. deserts usually weren't worth the calories - no flavor.
Ship Details:
Ship Quality
Dining/Food
too many specialty restauarants that you had to pay extra for. the costs of these restaurants were higher than you would pay for on land rather than being partially compensated for by the cruise cost.
Stateroom Quality
Ship Staff Quality
stateroom attendants were good, dining staff was hit and miss, activitiy staff also hit and miss.
